Biography of Jamini Roy:
Famous Indian Artist and painter Jamini Roy was born on April 11, 1887 at Beliator village in the Bankura district of West Bengal. Jamini Roy was one of the greatest painters of the 20th century. Jamini's father, Ramataran Roy, was a middle class citizen who gave resign from government service to keep his interest in art world.
In 1903, Only on 16 years old, Jamini Roy came to Kolkata to join in the Government School of Art. He has received tutelage from Abanindranath Tagore, a great legend in the field of modern art. Everyday life of the people of rural Bengal expressed in the most paintings of Jamini Roy. He was also famous at academic tradition for drawing Classical nudes and painting in oils which made him for receiving Diploma in fine art in 1908.
Jamini Roy's paintings mainly based upon religious theme including Ramayana, Sri Chaitanya, Radha-Krishna and Jesus Christ. 'Santhals engaged in drum-beating' and 'Santhal Mother and Child', 'Dancing Santhals' are some awesome paintings form the lives of the aboriginal Santhals. In 1925, he was very much influenced with the Kalighat temple in Calcutta.
The initial step of his artistic carrier was a blunder as he worked in European post-impressionist style though he achieved more. Like the pata-painters of Bengal, he served his own paintings from indigenous materials like lampblack, chalk-powder, leaves and creepers.
Jamini Roy's works were first exposed in British India Street , Kolkata in 1938. His works became very famous during the 1940. In 1946, his work was exhibited in London and in 1953 it was in New York. He also influenced with the terracotta's design of the Vishnupur temple.
Now some famous artistic works of Jamini Roy includes Santhal Boy with Drum, Cats Plus , Cats Sharing a Prawn, Kitten , St. Ann and the Blessed Virgin, Makara, Krishna and Balarama, Krishna and Radha Dancing, Seated Woman in Sari, Warrior King, Ravana, Sita And Jatayu, Vaishnavas , Virgin And Child and many more.
In 1955, Jamini Roy was awarded as the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. He has received a Viceroy's Gold medal in all India exhibition for one of his work. The legend painter of India breathed his last on 1972 in Kolkata at the age of 85.
