Rimi(Koel)is a cool New York girl who decides to visit her motherland India, particularly Kolkata, with the intention to finish her thesis. Here she encounters Deb(Dev) a happy-go-lucky guy who falls in love with Rimi at first sight when he sees her at a temple. He,going by his undermined self-confidence and attitude, finally succeeds to get her love after saving her from the college goon Rony. Senator dad,Gunodhar Sen(Rajatava) returns to India and tricks Rimi in returning back to New York because he considers her to be immature enough to fall in love with her "paglu" who is so below their status. What follows is the stuggle and problems that Deb undertakes to get the love of his life and make her his own.Review, rating and public verdict of Bengali movie Paglu
The movie is really peppy and totally targeted to the new-age spectators. The visuals are spectacular with the songs sequences being shot at exotic locations like Switzerland and New York(cinematography by Kumud Verma). The characters have been very well fleshed out with even the friends of the leads playing an integral role in almost every scene. The fight sequences provide an arm rest clinching watch with the nanchaku portion being the very USP of this film. Koel really doesn"t have much to do in the movie other than interacting with her father and romance with Dev. Known for his peppy songs,Jeet Ganguly doesn't disappoint us with his music and the two songs which really stand out are Paglu Thoda Sa Karle Romance and Mon Bebagi. There is a bit of plagiarism with the train sequence from Ghulam and also Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge when Dev refuses to take Koel along with him to India because he is sure that her father will eventually bless them and accompany her to India. The movie may be considered as an Indianised Mills and Boons which displays all the incredible extents to which love can take us.
Dev,who provides the footing on which the entire film stands, possesses wonderful screen charisma which leaves us with no oppurtunity to question his acting skills. He brings to life the character and entertains the crowd with his dancing skills(choreography by Baba Yadav)and dialouges(written by N.K.Salil). Rajatava, though the bad-guy of the movie,is an entertaining watch with his tongue-in-cheek humour and also has the best dialogues like 'Ranaghat er meye toh...ghaat e ghaat e buddhi' and 'Jiska koi nehi hai, uska sasur hai'.Koel is a soothing watch who surely has not much oppurtunity to display her acting capabilities.PAGLUMay score high in terms of box-ratings but does not favour to the critics choice since it requires the 'willful suspension of belief'and takes it a bit too far.
