Bengal Engineering and Science University was established on 1856 at Shibpur, Howrah. It is the most prominent University in India ocuuping the 4th rank in the huge list of oldest Engineering college in India. Recently this University has celebrated its 150th anniversary where initially it was known as the Calcutta Civil Engineering college and was for first introducing Engineering education. It has a huge green campus wiyh 4 storied academic Building, an 8 storied extension building, a workshop complex, a 3 storied Material science building, 2 canteens and a University auditorium. 
This University has the key features including programs for bachelor and master degrees in engineering and applied science. Research degrees including masters and Ph. D is also the main feature of this University. The popular magazine "India Today" ranked this University to 10th position in the year 2005. This University had grown its carrier from 24th November with only 10 students and few teachers. In 1921 it got its proper name Bengal Engineering College removing the word Shibpur. Before 1992 it was under the University of Calcutta. In 1992 this University was refered as a Deemed University. Formally inauguration of yhis University was held on 13th july of 2005 by Abdul Kalam Azad. For its excellence performances Central Government refered this University ot the status for IIT. But later on this University got its status of IIEST known as Indian Institute of Engineering science and Technology.
Bengal Engineering and Science University provides the Bachelor Degree courses of 8 semester and B-Arch courses of 10 semesters. Courses offered in Architecture are Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Tele communication Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Engineering. These courses are also offered by this University in Postgraduate Degree. Along these, this University also offers several part-time courses.
This University is situated on the western bank of river Hoogly in Howrah which is opposite to the city Kolkata. Shalimar railway station is very nearer to this University which is only 2kms away from the University campus and the Kolkata Airport is 30kms away from the University.
