The place Bishnupur got its name in the year AD 994. Earlier during the ruling of Malla rulers it was known as Mallabhum. The Malla rulers built very large terracotta temples during the 17th and 18th century at this place. Here the patronage of Malla King Veer Hambir and his successors Raja Raghunath Singha and Veer Singha is laos present which gives a lot of significance to this place.
