Nouka Dubi – Rituparno Ghosh’s Latest Bengali Movie.
On the 150 years of Rabidranath Tagore, eminent film maker Subash Ghai released his first Bengali film Nouka dubi on the 6th of May 2011 which was just one day before the 25th Baishak. This film is based on a short story of Rabindranath Tagore. This film has even been dubed by Shubash Ghai in Hindi and has been named as ‘Kashmakash’.

This flim takes us back to the 1920s. Nouka Dubi is a love film where Ramesh, a law student fell in love with his friend's sister Hemnalini. Circumstances forced him to marry a different girl named Susheela from his village. After marriage they set out on a boat back to Kolkata where Ramesh had to complete his studies.
On the other hand Hemalini knows nothing about the marriage just knowing that Ramesh would soon be back after his work got over.
In the middle of the river due to heavy storm the boat capsizes. The newly married couple gets separated and later in the night Ramesh finds himself in a deserted shore. On a shore he finds a bride unconscious and mistakes her for Susheela. From there they take a train back to Kolkata.
Reaching Kolkata, Ramesh gradually discovers his mistake. The lady he was with was not Susheela but Kamala. On the night when the Nouka Dubi happened, she was travelling with her husband Dr. Nalinaksha Chatterjee and so he tries to trace him out putting Kamala in a boarding school.
The story of Nouka Dubi takes a turn when Akshay, Hemalini's would be suitor comes to know the truth and informs Hemnalini. Ramesh feeling helpless goe to hiding with Kamala and Hemnalini heart broken goes to Kashi with her father for a change where she meets Dr. Nalinaksha Chatterjee and a relationship grows up in between them.
Kamala, on the other hand spots the advertisement Ramesh had given to find out Nalinaksha in an old newspaper. Unable to bear the sudden shock she decides to commit suicide and leaves a suicide note to inform Ramesh. Ramesh after finding the suicide note searchs for Kamala everywhere in vain. Kamala rescued by a courtesan takes her to Nalinaksha's house at Kashi. Searching for Kamala, Ramesh follows her to Nalinaksha's house at Kashi where the couple met.
