Birbhum district is situated in West Bengal in the northernmost region of the Burdwan district. It is cleared that the district has been in existence since pre-historic period from archaeological survey. This place is roughly triangular-shaped district is very much popular for Shantiniketan, a major tourist attraction in all of West Bengal. This place is also famous for composing many literature by Rabindranath Tagore. Shantiniketan now became a university campus home to the Vishwa Bharati University. Tarapith is also a superb pilgrimage centre placed here.
Birbhum district is placed in the northernmost part of the Bardhaman district in the state of West Bengal. Graphical representation shows the district is located between 23 degrees 32 minutes and 24 degrees 35 minutes north latitude and 88 degrees 1 minute east with 87 degrees 5 minutes east longitude. The base of this triangle shaped district is built by the river Ajay. Covering a total area of 4545 Sq. Kms, Boundry for the Birbhum district consists of Santhal Parganas in the north and West, by the Murshidabad district and Bardhaman district in the east and by Bardhaman on the south. It is spaced apart by the Ajay River.
Birbhum is one of the important district in the Rarh area with a considerable region under an undulating topography in the western region of the district. It is basically an agriculture-based district. The district has a great importance in the field of agriculture including the gradual development of irrigation sector. Rice is the major crop harvest in this district which occupies about 70 percent of the grossed cropped region including other majort crops like wheat, potato, mustard, vegetables, sugarcane and pulses.
