Partition of Burdwan district
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal is trying her level best to bring up some changes in the state and to develop a new way of administration in the state. Still now she had taken many steps towards our state and people are having an optimist view on Mamata Banerjee.
Splitting of Burdwan district is a worthwhile decision taken by our honourable chief minister. It has been decided that Asansol to Durgapur will be under a new district and the rest part will remain under Burdwan district.
Though still there is nothing fixed about the name of the new district and there is also a debate going on about the administrative head of the district. Some people are in favour of making Asansol the headquarters while some say Durgapur.Reason for splitting up the Burdwan district
The plan of splitting of Burdwan district has been made many days back but it was not implemented due to various reasons. The Asansol Municipal Corporation mayor and chairman of Asansol-Durgapur Development Authority, Mr Tapas Banerjee said that "It is a long-standing demand by the people of the industrial hub."
He also said "It's less significant where from it would operate. Rather it would benefit development of the area." In the mid 1980s the Ashoke Mitra Commission had suggested for the splitting up of the district.
Comments made by the mayor of Durgapur municipal corporation, Mr Rathin Roy were "For administrative reason the splitting might be essential, but I would stand beside an undivided Burdwan." He also said "For demographic reasons I reserve my vote for splitting the district as it may give birth to a new demand for inclusion of Asansol with Jharkhand in future." Headquarters of the new district of West Bengal
The new district has to have its headquarters somewhere inside its boundaries. It is nothing fixed yet about the administrative headquarters and the name of the new districts. Though there are various suggestions and demands made by the people. The Durgapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry demands the new district to be named as Asansol-Durgapur and the headquarters of the district to be at Durgapur.
Mr Dinabandhu Chatterjee, general secretary of the body, said "Durgapur has got a strategic location and has well furbished infrastructure." which shows there interest of having the headquarters in Durgapur itself.
The president of Ranigunj Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mr Kanhaiya Singh, is in an against opinion to this and said said "We had been struggling for a separate Asansol district for long." This shows that they want the headquarters to be located in Asansol.
Mr Ajoy Khaitan, president of a Jamuria traders' body also presented his demand of having the headquarters of the new district at Asansol.
The partition of the Burdwan district is expected to bring some more development in the developing portions of our state like Ranigunj, Asansol and Durgapur as the division will help to administrate well.
