Hamidabaichi Kothi Marathi play dates and venues in Mumbai

This article gives information on the story and cast of the Marathi play Hamidabaichi Kothi, director of Hamidabaichi Kothi and the dates when it will be staged in March 2011 in Mumbai and Pune.

Sunil Barve, a well known theatre, film & TV actor, launched project Herbarium to mark 25 years of his career on stage. This project aims to revive 5 plays of well-known playwrights with new actors & directors. Each play would be restricted to 25 shows only, so that actors would be free to take up other professional work. The directors selected for the project were given the freedom to select whichever play they wished to direct. Also, in order to provide better remuneration to established theatre stars, Barve increased the price of the theatre tickets. Audiences still came in droves, proving that Marathi theatre is very much alive.

The first 2 successful plays of Barve's projects were:
* Vasant Kanetkar's Suryachi Pille (meaning The Sun's Fledglings). It was directed by Pratima Kulkarni.
* Bal Kolhatkar's Lahanpan Dega Deva (meaning Lord, give me back my childhood). It was directed by Mangesh Kadam

The third play in this project is Anil Barve's Hamidabaichi Kothi, which was directed by the acclaimed theatre director & artiste Vijaya Mehta way back in 1979. The story of Hamidabaichi Kothi centers on he kothi culture of nautch girls (called tawaifs), primarily the attempt of Hamidabai to revive the traditional kotha singing. Coincidentally, star actor Neena Kulkarni had been in the cast of the play at that time and is now taking on the role of Hamidabai which Vijaya Mehta herself had performed. This time, the director's baton is in the hands of Chandrakant Kulkarni. He tries to bring out each character's struggle and conflicts. He has maintained the 1960s era's background & ambience for the play, for which Pradeep Mulye has done the sets & the music is composed by Ashok Patki.
