Uzan Bazaar- the oldest place in Guwahati


UzanBazzar is a commercial hub in Guwahati city. It is the oldest settlement in the city. The place is famous for the fish market or fish port where you will get fresh river fishes. The details of the place is given below.

Uzan Bazaar is a commercial cum residential area located at the heart of Guwahati city. It is situated beside the Brahmaputra River in the Northern part of the city. This area is famous for its fish market where people can buy fresh fished of the river. It is one of the oldest settlements in Guwahati city. There are many tourist places in and around the area. From this place people used to sail to Upper Assam on boats as this is the one and only ghat in Lower Assam. As the city served as a major commercial hub since the Ahom rule it was called Bazaar.

Jor Pukhuri: In Assamese Jor means 'a pair' and Pukhuri means 'pond'. Thus Jor Pukhuri stands for a pair of ponds. It is situated at the residential area of Uzanbazzar. These two ponds are just behind the famous Ugratara temple, a major centre of Shakti Puja from time immemorial. According to the local people of the place the water of the ponds have an under source with the river Brahmaputra.

Latasil: It is a playground and a permanent venue for Bihu and Durga Puja celebrations in the city. It also serves as a coaching center and practice ground for various cricket and football clubs.

Kharghuli : It is the hilly landscape of Uzan Bazar area. It is the residential area of some prominent features. The governor house and Judges residence is also located here.

Maas Ghat or fish port: A small market area famous for its fresh river fishes. Huge rush can be seen in this port during Bihu festival.

Kachari Bozaar: It is another commercial market place near the Brahmaputra River. It is a typical Assamese country side market where you will get varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Baruwari Puja Mandap: It is a major prayer hall for the local people of Uzan Bazaar area. Every year Durga puja is celebrated in this hall. This mandap is also used for Hindu marriage ceremonies, sacred thread (Upanayan) ceremonies and various traditional events and functions.

Vivekananda Kendra: Guwahati's branch of Vivekananda Kendra is in Uzan Bazaar just near the Brahmaputra River. It serves as a center of Yoga, Cultural and spiritual studies. Free computer training course is also available here.

Apart from these major places there are many other places like Planetarium, Nabagraha temple, Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir and Bishnu Nirmala Xhixu Poothibhnoraal is also situated in this place.
