Lohri is the festival celebrated after the sowing of Ravi crop, a winter crop in north, especially in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. As this festival comes in the month of Magh(January) therefore it is also known as 'Maghi' festival. The main motive of celebrating Lohri is to pray for fertility and prosperity.

It is believed that on Lohri the sun starts its Northward journey. Sun moves to the hemisphere of the Makar and this movement is termed Uttarayan.

Khichri is the most popular dish prepared on the festival of Lohri in Himachal. Khichri is prepares with help of all the delicious ingredients like asafoetida, zeera, garam masala etc. Taste of khichri is incomplete without the pure desi Ghee.
