After releasing Naan Kadavul in February 2009, Bala announced that he is going to direct a new film which will not be a tragedy but a comedy. He wants to get good box office returns and so he declared to take a double hero subject film. Initially Ocher Studios of Soundarya Rajinikanth was to produce the film. Later Kalpathi S. Agoram wants to take up the project and so the film is produced under the banner of AGS Entertainment.

The story of the film revolves around the step brothers, so for this role real-life siblings were given consideration. They thought of real brothers Surya and Karthi as well as Jeeva and Githan Ramesh for the lead roles. But later the roles were replaced with Arya and Vishal, who were good friends.

Bala's tamil film Avan Ivan was announced to be completed within eight months of time. The shooting of the film was taken in different parts of Tamilnadu. The majority of the shots were taken in and around Theni. The other places where the film was shot are Tenkasi, Shenkottah, Courtallam, Ambasamudram, and Chennai Kilpauk Medical College. A chance was given to Priyanka, Srinisha and Nithyashree, participants of Airtel Super Singer Junior. All lyrics of Avan Ivan were written by the famous lyricist Na. Muthukumar.
