Overview about the Arakonnam train accident


On 14th September 2011 at about 9.10pm this Train accident event undertook near Sitheri Railway Station which is nearer to Arakonnam Railway Station.
Arakkonam - Kaatpadi Passenger train was waiting near the spot for the Red Signal to get cleared off and at that time a train which has a scheduled journey from the Chennai beach Railway Station towards the Vellore Cantonment Electric Train suddenly lost its control and clashed on the foretold Train. As a result of this a set of about 10 Persons died and 86 persons got severe Wounds. After this great clash of the trains the Engine got smashed completely and two compartments got derailed and two compartments adjacent to it got damaged.

In between the Arakkonam Railway station and the Chitheri railway station there are three Signals to regulate the trains at correct spot. Among those 3 signals, 2 are Automatic and the remaining one is a Manually operated one. This manually operated Signal is near to Chiteri Railway station and it is the spot where the train clash happened. As a notable fact, there was only Red signal during the period of accident.

Suspects of the Accident

Since the Driver of the Train got severely wounded in the face, he is in unconscious stage and got admitted in Government Hospital, Chennai there is no clear idea about the reason for the accident.
But there are some assumptions. According to the fact told by Mr. Deepak Girisan, General Manager of Southern Railways.

  • This Train accident is mainly due to the carelessness of the Driver of Beach Train. There will be a Green Signal only when all the 3 signals in that route get cleared but the driver have rushed even without the clearing of Red Signal to Green.

  • And if he had noticed the Signal, he would have slowed down the train to 15 Kms/hr but the train clashed the other with a speed of about 90 kms/hr.


  • Central Railway Minister Mr. Dinesh Trivedi told that
  • The main and only reason behind the train accident is the carelessness of the Driver and there will only be clear facts about this accident after the Driver return to conscious State.

  • It is also suspected that there may be a Terrorist activity.

    9. Muniappan (17), Panaavaram
    10. Siva Lingam(Age 52), Thalangai

    As a admirable fact the driver of the Train Rajkumar (Age 32) got escaped but wounded. He jumped from the train before the train clash. There are about 68 wounded persons are admitted in Arakkonam Government Hospital and 28 persons are admitted in the ICU in Chennai Government Hospital.

    Relief fund for the Victims of the accident

    Central Railway Minister Mr. Dinesh Trivedi have announced relief funds for the Victims of the Accident and its details are as follows:
  • Amount of Rs. 5 Lakhs for the families of died persons.

  • Amount of Rs. 1 Lakhs for the families of Severely Wounded persons.

  • Amount of Rs. 25,000 for the families of wounded persons.

  • We have our tears to shed for the those who lost their lives! It is very necessary to appoint responsible staffs for the Driving of locomotives since every passenger's life rely on him till he reaches the destination point.
