Madras Medical College and Research Institute


This college is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the oldest Medical colleges in India. It has produced a enormous number of Doctors and it is still serving the people and serves as a memorable monumentem in Tamil Nadu. The college is funded by the Tamil Nadu state government. History of Madras Medical College


The Madras Medical College was started in 16/11/1664 by the British East India Company to look after the wounded soldiers in war. The Hospital was first started in St. George Fort and later on in 1772 came to its present place. The hospital took its form as medical school by the effort of Dr.Mortimar. The G.H (Government Hospital) was attached to this institute along with the state government's fund.

At the earlier days only the Europeans, Eurasians and western candidates were educated in this college. The Indians were admitted as students in this college only from 1842. In 1857 the college got its affiliations form University of Madras. Dr. Muthu Laksmi Reddy was the first lady doctor graduated from this medical college. By Feb.2010 the college has completed 175 years.
