Makkan Peda is one of the popular sweet in North Arcot District in Tamilnadu and so called Arcot Sweet. It is nothing but Gulab Jamun stuffed with dry fruits and nuts. This sweet can be prepared either with Gulab Jamun Instant mix or with Khoa which can be bought readymade from departmental stores. Ingredients for making Gulab Jamun with nuts or Makkan Peda recipe


makkan peda• Milk Khoa – 1 cup
• Maida – 2 tbsp
• Milk powder – 1/4 cup
• Cooking soda – 1/4 tsp
• Milk – 1/2 cup
• Sugar – 3 cups
• Cardamom and sugar powder – 1/2 tsp
• Slivered almonds – 2 tbsp
• Raisins – 1/4 cup
• Broken cashew nuts – 2 tbsp
• Broken pistachios – 2 tbsp
• Oil – 2 and 1/2 cups

If you are using Gulab Jamun instant mix then replace the first five ingredients given above with the mix.

• Gulab Jamun instant mix – 1 packet
• Milk powder – 1/2 cup
• Milk – 3/4 cup
• Cooking soda – 1/4 tsp

Method of Preparation of Makkan Peda


1. Makkan Peda using khoa: First take khoa, maida, milk powder, cooking soda in a bowl and mix well. Next add a little amount of milk and knead it to a soft non sticky dough.

2. Makkan Peda using Gulab Jamun Instant Mix: Mix the instant mix, milk powder, cooking soda in a mixing bowl and knead to make a non sticky dough with milk.

3. Allow the dough to stand for 15 minutes.

4. Now take all the nuts in a plate such as badam, cashews, pistas, kismis, etc.

5. Now make small balls of the desired size out of the dough.

6. Make a hole in the ball and fill it with the nuts, close and flatten it a bit just like cutlets.

7. Make the same with the remaining dough.

8. Heat oil in a kadai such that it should not be too hot or warm.

9. Take a pan add sugar and 3 cups of water for making the sugar syrup.

10. Boil the above till all the sugar melts.

11. Turn off the stove and remove the syrup from heat.

12. The Sugar syrup must be hot when dropping the pedas.

13. Now put the stuffed Pedas in oil.

14. Fry well till it becomes brown.

15. Now drop the cooked pedas in sugar syrup.

16. Allow it to stand for 4 to 5 hours.

Now the Makkan Pedas are ready to be served.
