The Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology (ACCET) in Karaikudi is an autonomous college from 2009. This Engineering Colleges in Tamilnadu was first started in in 1952. The college then became under the control of government in the later stage. The college has been selected by the world Bank to participate in Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme(TEQIP). The Alagappa Chettiar Educational Trust was first started by the great efforts of Dr. R.M. Alagappa Chettiar. He had the aim of developing the backward class people and enrich the minds of the poor and needy. The college was first started in 21 July 1952 only with three faculties. In 1966 the college passed into the hands of the Tamil Nadu Government. It was in 1983 the post graduate engineering courses like M.E. in Microwave and Optical Engineering started were started in ACCET.
