Salem district is located in the centre part of Tamilnadu. The district has got the name as “Salem" because of its location. The word “Salem" is derived from the route word “sailam" which means surrounded by hills. The previously it was called as “Kongu Nadu". When we remember Salem we always remember Salem mangos. As Salem district is surrounded by hills many natural resources are available in Salem District. There are few Hill stations in Salem District which are famous worldwide. Yercaud hills in Salem is such one. The cool climate prevailing there attracts the tourist and it is one of summer tourism part in Salem. The “Kurinchi" flower which flowers once in twelve years are seen in this places. There are also many educational institutions in Salem District. The district also includes some major factories like Steel Plant in Salem is one of the biggest steel factory in South India. The Factory uses the locally available raw materials and makes different types of irons. This has the great market all over India. There are many such a things in Salem. Kolli hills in Salem district is located in a distance of 100 km from Salem and 40 km from Namakkal district. This Kolli hills have been rated as the second famous hill station in Salem district. The hill top is situated to a about 1190 meters height from the sea level. The Agaya kangai waterfall will surely attract all the visitors with its beauty. The natural scene from the hill top – a greenery view will give the peace and joy to the heart and make our tough feelings light or no more. Hogenakkal is at the edge of Salem District and very closer to Karnataka. The Hogenakkal is the place through which the famous Tamil Nadu river Caurey flows. Here the other two rivers namely Sanatha and Kumara Nadhi meets together. The water fall is the attracting point of everyone. The water falls from a height of 250 meters and makes a thundering sound. The name Hogenakkal was given to this place because of this water fall. Hogenakkal means (in Kanada ) “Smocking rock".
