Tiruchendur Lord Muruga temple Story

Lord Muruga temple has an interesting story. According to the epics, Lord Murugan killed a Demon named Surapadman here in Tiruchendur. After killing Surapadman, Murugan used his spear and created the Naazhi Kinaru (a good drinking water spring), just near the Sea Shore. After the event of killing Surapadman, every year Soorasamharam and Skandashasti is celebrated here.

And once in 1649, the idol of Lord Murugan was taken away by Dutch Pirates. The Dutch pirates came from the Virapandianpatnam, a nearby village sea, entered the temple. And when they were ordered to leave by the Nayak King ruling from Madurai, they broke into the temple and took with them the idol of Lord Murugan. When they were in the sea, heavy storm and rain happened and tried to drown their ship. Afraid of this event, the Dutch pirates dropped the idol of Lord Murugan into the sea. And on of a sudden the Heavy rain and storm stopped.

At the shore people were worried about the lost of idol. Lord Murugan appeared in the dream of Vadamalayappa pillai (a devotee of Murugan) and informed him what happened to the idol and ship of Dutch. Lord Murugan told him about the location where he can find the idol. And Vadamalayappa Pillai went into the sea along with fisherman, found a lemon floating in water, and there in deep sea they found the idol of Lord Murugan. This happened in 165 A.D. All these events are drawn in the Temple premises.

Many festivals like Brahmotsavam, Vasanthotsavam, Vaikasi visakam and Skandashasti are celebrated. Two maha utsavams called Aavaniperunthirunaal and Maasiperunthirunaal are celebrated.

The only request I want to add here is all the devotees who visit Tiruchendur should help in keeping the sea shore clean. Lots and lots of waste are dumped in shore which creates bad non hygeinic atmosphere and bad image for the Temple.
Please people, help Tiruchendur temple to keep clean.
