Galiff Street - Paradise for pet lovers in Kolkata

Each sunday morning, the destinations of pet lovers of Kolkata even West Bengal and surrounding states is Galiff street. Here an unique pet market is held every Sunday morning. Initially this market was developed near the Hatibagan, a well known place in North Kolkata. Due to the huge popularity, and space constraint this market was shifted to Galiff street. The place is very close to Shyambazar 5 point crossing, From 5 point crossing if you go towards BT road, the market will be on your left side just before the first bridge. The road, on which the market is held remain closed for traffic on that day. Only few trams, as because the depot is there move from there with great difficulty.

The market start very early in the morning at about 4:30am! The pet business owners from whole West Bengal and surrounding states reach early to collect their stocks. at about 8 am, huge rush of hobbyists can be seen. Even hobbyists sell their stocks directly.

You can buy almost every kind of pets and their accessories you can think of. On entering the road on the right side you will see different breed of dogs are on sale. Almost all breeds are available. Price is much cheaper! I asked about the breed certificate - They said they can provide that with extra money.

Next comes the different variety of birds, not all of them is legal to be sold though. Cages food and other accessories are also available.

Pigeons are possibly the most popular pet in Kolkata. This portion of the market remain most crowded. You will be amazed to see the varieties of color and features.

Guinea pigs, rabits, white rats all are available for you, if you want them to keep as pets.

Chickens, hens, ducklings are really cute to see. Even books on pet keeping in local language is also available.

Plants of different kinds, stacked together for sale is really pleasing to the eye. It is very rare to see such variety of plants in a same place!

Fish pet market is really awesome! Common breeds, native fishes, and many rare breeds are available. Each week you will find different stocks. Go through the pictures to have an idea. aquatic plants are also available, mostly the native variety, but they do great in planted aquariums. accessories of many kinds are also available, including costly filters!
