HR Management Excellence in Current Economic Situation

Current Economic Scenario is a scenario of recession including lay-offs, decrease in salary percentage etc. There is now less industrial activity, and as a result more people are unemployed. As a Professional how will you face this challenge? And here HR managers have to play a strategic and vital role.

In an economic crisis like this, the role of HR leaders is in morale and employee development activities. While HR cannot predict the future, he /she can develop the employees. Human Resources are the human capital, they are no more workers. Company flourishes if the human capital is an improved one and vice-versa. HR strategy must be aligned to the business strategy.

Engagement of large no of contract workers and managing the same can be the most important problem. We can introduce different kinds of Empowerment activities like forming Quality Circles, TQM, etc.

To turn the crisis into opportunity, one needs courage. We can predict that insurance sector and Education sector will not suffer.

We have to harness people through appropriate training and development programs. Management and Managed should be based on mutual trust. At this point of time, we can recall the teachings of Gandhi and TATAs "Let my people work for 4 hrs but I will not cut down the salary". Problems will be there but nothing should live forever. Work with deep passion and sincerity and we can survive in this crisis.
Always be prepared for the surprises. "Vision is the art of seeing the invisible."

As an HR manager, you have to communicate, communicate, and communicate. It is a tough time and the employees are also realizing that they are in trouble. Communicate them about the Health of your organization, about the reality, about their career path. Be transparent. Don't forget your own values. Employees are important stakeholders in business also. The employees have to be told that we are giving you what you deserve and you will reciprocate when time comes. Train your people, upgrade them. Engage with your employees and talk to them and feel them from their viewpoint. Sit down and prepare yourself for the future. Attend Seminars, workshops and training sessions that will guide you in the near future.

An essential attribute of a good leader is to motivate and inspire people in bad times.
Challenges for an HR Manager, at this moment would be
 Recruiting the right talent
 Attract, motivate, and retaining your own employees
 Developing and nourishing new talents
 Organizing mentoring and counseling sessions with the senior management
 Transforming Routine jobs into more Challenging ones
 Create a relationship of trusteeship with your own employees because they are assets to your company.


Now there is competition everywhere.

 Revisit your every organization processes, redesign your compensation structures
 Rethink about various employee benefits like House Rent Allowance, Leave Encasement, Telephone and Mobile bill Reimbursement, Club Membership
 Reduce various administrative costs and negotiate with your Service Providers
 Promotions and Increments can be deferred till the situation comes down to normal.
 Develop people with cross-functional skills so that extra manpower can be rotated and gainfully utilized.
 Create a positive work culture. Communicate with your employees on an individual platform.
