Early Life of Ashapoorna Devi
Ashapoorna Devi was born on 8th January in the year 1909 in the place of Potoldanga in North Kolkata. She was born in a very conservative family of North Kolkata where women's education was not given so much importance. Her father's name was Harendra Nath Gupta who was a famous artist of that time and her mother's name was Sarola Sundari. Ashapoorna Devi has never been to school for formal education. But her mother was a very strong woman and she used to have a tremendous urge of reading. She used to get varieties of books from different libraries of Kolkata with the help of her husband and read them with great satisfaction. Sarola Sundari has developed this same urge into her children and thus little Ashapoorna developed long love relationships with the books. Little Ashapoorna used to memorize the Bengali alphabets only by listening to her elder brother who used to prepare his lessons loudly. Ashapoorna Devi wrote her first book for children namely "Choto Thakurer Kashi Jatra" which was published in the year 1938. Her first Novel was "Prem O Proyojon" which was published in the year 1944.
Ashapoorna Devi showed her excellence in different types of works like novels for adults, short stories, books, literatures and poems both for children and adults. Most of her novels are based on joys and sorrows of women that give importance to the women's position in a traditional Hindu society. The most important trilogy that made her famous was Subarnalata, Bakulkatha and Pratham Pratisruti, which shows that how women have to struggle to achieve equal rights in today's society. Ashapoorna Devi has been bestowed with a number of awards during her lifetime. In the year 1954 she received the Lila Prize given by University of Calcutta. In the year 1976 she received the Jnanpith Award for her Prothom Protishruti. She was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in the year 1976. In the year 1988 she received the Haranath Ghosh Medal from the Bangiya Sahitya Prarishad. In the year 1993 University of Calcutta again awarded her with the Jagattarini Gold Medal. In the year 1994 the Sahitya Academy awarded her highest honor-the Fellowship for her noted contribution in Bengali literature.
