Sultanpur bird sanctuary was founded by Dr. Salim Ali and hosts a variety of migratory birds many from the harsh areas of Siberia and Europe. It is about 16kms from Gurgaon and 46kms from Delhi. About 100 unique species have been already identified in this sanctuary and some of the important ones are saras, crane, spot bill, ruddy shel duck, rosy pelicans etc.

The administration has made various arrangements for the ease of serious bird watcher as well as tourists. There are many well developed hide outs, watch towers and a museum for those interested in academic study of the these birds. The Government has also opened Guest rooms, restaurant, family cottages, bar, water towers and catering wing for all sorts of tourists.

Flora and fauna to be found at Sultanpur National park and Bird Sanctuary


You will find both resident as well as migratory birds here in good season. A few of the resident ibrds found here are Gray and Black Franklolins, Hoopoe, Indian Roller, Drongo, Paddyfield Pipit, at least five variey of larks, three types of egrets, Purple Sunbird, Kingfishers, Lapwings, Indian Courser, Bushchats, Indian and Magpie Robins, Prinias, Black Kites, Shikra, Marsh Harrier, Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black Shouldered Kite, Sarus Crane, Comb Duck, Spotbilled Duck, Cormorants, Night Heron, Spotted Owlet and two types of Parakeets.

Migratory birds found in Sultanpur National park and Bird Sanctuary are Teal, Sandpipers, Plovers, Black winged Stilt, Green Shank, Red Shanks, Gaganey, Northern Shoveller, Pintail, Spoonbills and Brahminy Duck.

How to reach Sultanpur National park and Bird Sanctuary


The nearest airport to Sultanpur National park< is Delhi airport. From Delhi airport Sultanpur National park and Bird Sanctuary is about 47 kms away and from Gurgaon it is 16 kms away.

You can also opt for the world class metro service from Delhi to Gurgaon. Otherwise the other two options are to take a bus but as these are mostly over crowded you can instead hire a taxi from Delhi to Sultanpur.

Fees to enter Sultanpur National park and Bird Sanctuary Entry fees is Rs 5 and a further charge of Rs 25 is levied on cameras.

The weather on the bird sanctuary is typically Haryanvi. It remains harsh and hot during summer months (upto 46 degree Celsius), gets freezing cold upto 0 degree Celius in winders and receives a short spell of rains in the months of July till August last.
