Luís Remo de Maria Bernardo Fernandes, or popularly known as Remo Fernandes is one of the popular pop singer in India. He had a successful career in the Bollywood film and music industry and is known for some of the smash hit songs 'Humma Humma' in the movie 'Bombay' and pop album 'O meri munni'.

Remo Fernandes was born in 8th May 1953 to a well known Catholic family in Panjim, the capital of Goa. As he was born in Goa which has a diverse culture and hence he was greatly influenced by the various music forms in Goa. He was a natural guitar player and formed a band Beat4 while in the school. Remo graduated with a degree in Architecture from Mumbai(then bombay). However Remo was more inclined towards music than academics and usually bunked classes and instead practiced his guitar playing.

After graduation he came back to Goa and started a fusion band called 'Indiana'. During 1977 to 1980s he travelled Europe and North Africa and spent his life as a hippy travelling the streets and performing for the amusement of people.

Remo's music career


Remo had initially lots of problem for getting a launch as the music scenario in India was not suitable for his style of music. As the music industry of India comprised of only Hindi songs, he had to face rejection by the record companies of India as he used to sing in English.

Remo however didn't lose hope and produced his own cassettes. He recorded the cassette in his own home and right from writing the music to designing the cassette cover, he did it on his own. Later he went on distributing his cassettes from shops to shops in Goa.

When the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi came to Goa, he got his first important break in his career and was called to perform in an official ceremony. He sang a song titled 'Hello Rajiv Gandhi' which was later on highly publicised and he got his first taste of popularity. Also in a subsequent concert 'Aid Bhopal' which was regarding fund raising for the Bhopal gas tragedy victims, he performed some songs which were telecasted in the National television carrier 'Doordarshan'. This was a big milestone for Remo as Doordarshan had the monopoly in India during those times and it got him huge exposure.

However his biggest break came when he sang for the movie 'Jalwa' where he sang in Hindi. As Bollywood movies and Hindi songs are hugely popular in India, he gained tremendous success and became to be known as one of the playback singers in the Industry.

His first album 'Pack that smack' released in 1986 and 'Bombay city' the subsequent year made him the best selling English musician in India.

  • He became prominent in the Bollywood music scene with the smash hit song from the movie 'Bombay' with the song 'Humma Humma' which topped the music charts in India.
    Then he did the playback singing for the song 'Huya Ho' in the movie 'Khamoshi'.
    Then he became prominent in the Indian pop music industry in the 90s with the album 'O meri munni'.

    He currently resides in his ancestral home in Goa. He is married and has two children.
