Besides the exotic beaches, Goa has a rich history which many people do not know. The forts of Goa are a testimony to the historical legacy that Goa has. Not only they are one of the most sought after tourist spots, but they provide considerable information about the history of Goa. The scenic beauty from these forts is breath taking and many Bollywood movies have borrowed these exotic scenes in their screenplays. One such fort which is famous as well as attracts lots of tourists every year is the Cabo de Rama fort.

cabo de rama fort The fort Cabo de Rama is named after Lord Rama, the main character in the epic Ramayana. The fort is also known as fort Rama and is located in the Canacona district of Goa. This fort located 25 kms south of Margoa and is one of the oldest forts in Goa. Unlike the usual perception, most of the forts in Goa were built by the local rulers and not the Portuguese. The fort Rama unlike the other forts in Goa was built before the coming of the Portuguese.

Located at the tip of the land, the Cabo da Rama fort presents a combination of beauty and ruins. The fort finds mention in the mythological legends and is believed that Lord Rama took shelter here during his exile from Ayodhya.
The fort is believed to be constructed by Hindu warriors but felt in Portuguese hands when the King of Soonda was defeated by the Portuguese. The fort was subsequently renovated and was one of the stronghold positions of the Portuguese until they surrendered to the Indian forces.

The fort is presently not under Government use and is used only as a tourist spot. After the Portuguese abandoned this fort, it was used as a government prison.

The fort has been switched between many Hindu, Mughal and Portuguese rulers during the course of history. The fort is now totally in tethers and except for the outer walls which still stands strong; most of the buildings inside are totally worn out. This is really a matter of concern and the Government must take measures to preserve this historic monument.
Tourists who climb up on the fort and go to the western end are greeted with the grandeur view of the Colva beach and the Canancona stretch. This view was even captured in the Bollywood movie 'Dil Chahta hai'.

Inside the fort is a church of Santo Antonio built by the Portuguese. It is in good condition and is frequently visited by devotees. The white Santo Antonio church provides a contrasting look to the black fort. Various people and tourists come here either for prayers, to view its architectural marvel or just to spend some time in peace from the noisy environment of the Goan beaches and clubs.

Near the fort there is a small beach (paradise beach) which gives you an opportunity to refresh after the visit to the fort.

How to reach Cabo de Rama Fort

One can go to the fort by hiring taxi or by rented two wheelers or four wheelers. Bus services are also available from Margoa to Cabo de Rama fort.
