Bandhavgarh is located in the Umaria district of MP. Bandhavgarh is a wetline plateau terrain which is around 437 kms in area and is situated between the Vindhyas and the Satpura mountain ranges.

Bandhavgarh is a thick forest rich in flora and fauna. Bandhavgarh National Park is famous for having the most furious tigers. History reveals that this forest area was once the personal hunting ground of the King of Rewa. This forest was famous for White tigers during that era.

This wildlife region was known to have the highest no. of tigers in India and hence to preserve the breed it was declared as National Park in the year 1968.

Bandavgarh National Park is a thick forest with bamboo, Sal trees and grasslands all around. The thick forest gives animals a wonderful opportunity to hide from the humans. Bandavgarh is known as animal kingdom and has around 22 species of mammals and 250 species of birds. If you are lucky enough you will be able to spot around 50 tigers on one visit to this forest. Apart from tigers many other wild animals like fox, striped hyena, spotted deer , Asiatic jackal, sloth bear, ratel , Bengal fox, gray mongoose, jungle cat, leopard, sambar, wild pigs, nilgai, chinkara, palm squirrel, chausingha and gaur.

Bandavgarh National Park is a wonderful place for bird watchers too. There are plenty of species of birds here like Little Grebe, Egret, Lesser Whistling Teal, White-eyed Buzzard, Black Kite Vulture, lesser Adjutant Sarus Crane, Black Ibis, Egyptian Vulture, Common Peafowl, Crested Serpent Eagle, Black, Red Jungle Fowl, Dove, Parakeets, Kingfishers and Indian Rollers. Not only this, there are some dangerous species of repltiles too in this forest like Pythons and Cobras.

Best time to Visit Bandavgarh National Park


If you would ask the local people about this they would say the best time to go to this place is when the sun wakes up. Usually the best time to visit Bandavgarh National Park is either early in the morning or late afternoon. The jeep safari are allowed for a duration of 3 hrs in the national park at 2 times in a day. In the morning hrs at 6 and in the afternoon at 3 p.m. These 2 slots are provided keeping in mind that the activities of animals are highest in these hrs like hunting their pray, resting with their young ones, drinking water etc.

The best season to visit Bandhavgarh National Park is between January to April. However, the park is open during October to June. The National park is closed during July and August owing to the rainy season.

The nearest airport to Bandhavgarh National Park is in Khajuraho. It is a 6 – 7 hrs drive from Khajuraho airport.

One can reach Bandhavgarh National park through bus or train also. The nearest railway station and bus stop is at Umaria which is 30 min away from the National Park.
