History of Salar Jung Museum Hyderabad


We all know the fact that every museum has their-own history. Likewise the Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad also has their-own history. It is believed that a major portion of the collections present in this museum was acquired by Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Salar Jung lll, who was the former prime minister of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad. Since Salar Jung lll was a bachelor, he depended upon his staff for taking care of the collections. It should be noted that this museum was inaugurated in 1951 by Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the former prime minister of India. Later the museum was shifted to its present location at Afzalgunj and there is a belief that the present collection constitutes only half of the wealth collected by Salar Jung lll. The museum is administered by a board of trustees with the governor of Andhra Pradesh as the chairperson under the Salar Jung museum act of 1961.

For general public, the entry fees are Rs 10 but for foreign visitors it is Rs 150. Defence personnel in uniform, students with identity cards, children below 12 years of age and organized kisan parties are given 50% concession. Apart from this, you should remember that during the museum week i.e. from 8th -14th January, public will be given concession in the entrance ticket while for children's week i.e. from 14th-20th November, school children up to 12 years of age accompanied by teachers will be allowed free of charge.
