During the year 1983 -1986, a number of elephants started their journey from Anekal Hosur located in Tamil nadu and Bannerghatta in Karnataka to find their alternative homes in other states. At that time Andhra Pradesh was a state which had no elephants before. About 39 elephants moved to the forest of Andhra Pradesh during this time. So the Andhra Pradesh government took the decision to set up this Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary there.

This wildlife sanctuary is enclosed by southern tropical thorn type forests that consist of flora Albizia amara, Ficus bengalensis, Ficus religiosa, Bamboo and Ficustomentosa. In this sanctuary, you can see variety of animals like elephants, chital, Sāmbhar, mouse deer, jungle cat, jackal, panther, jungle fowl, antelope, hare and wild boar.
