About the Famous Sattriya Dance of Assam


Sattriya Dance or Sattriya Nritya is one of the famous traditional dance of Assam. This famous dance of Assam stands among the best eight traditional dances in India. The creator of the Famous Sattriya Dance of Assam was Srimanta Sankardeva who was a famous person of Assam. This famous Dance of Assam was started or created in 15th century. This dance was developed when Srimanta Sankardeva gave teaching on Ankiya Naat or it is also known as the one act play. This dance is most probably used on Sattras. As this dance was developed form sattras so the name of this dance is Sattriya Nritya or Sattriya Dance. This dance is also one of the oldest dance of Assam as this dance is about 500 years old or this famous Sattriya Dance of Assam was developed about 500 years ago.

This famous Sattriya Dance of Assam is divided or categorized into many sub groups or genres. These are : Behar Nritya, Dasavatara Nritya, Natua Nritya, Rajaghariya Chali Nritya, Bar Prabesh, Jhumura, Sutradhara, Apsara Nritya, Chali Nritya, Manchok Nritya, Rasa Nritya, Gosai Prabesh, Gopi Prabesh, Nadu Bhangi etc. The music which is used for this famous Sattriya Nritya or Sattriya dance is known as borgeets which was composed by Srimanta Sankardeva. This music is composed by using the traditional instruments such as : khols, taals, flute etc.
