About Lankeshwar Temple of Assam


Lankeshwar Temple is one of the oldest temples in Assam. It is situated at the top of the hill, just near the Guwahati University Campus. The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva. It is believed that Lanka pati Ravan, one of the greatest followers of Lord Shiva, worship here to impress Shiva. Thus the temple gets the name Lankeshwar. There are some stone sculptures and a shiva linga in the main temple.This temple is not only important as a pilgrimage place but also a tourist destination in Guwahati. From this place one can see the magnificent view of Brahmaputra River and the town. Every year thousands of devotees visit this temple and seek divine blessings for Lord Shiva.In order to reach the temple one has to climb around 452 staircases. There is a Ganesh temple in the main gate which is recently built.
Its location is one of the important attractions for the tourists. Most common visitors of the temple are amongst the couples of Guwahati city, students of Guwahati University, and Assam Engineering College.
