Nagaon District of Assam


Nagaon district is one of the largest districts of Assam. This district is famous as, a land of Rhinos and satras. A part of the world famous Kaziranga National Park falls under this district. The district is also important in religious point of view because it is the birth place of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. This article will provide the detail information about the district.

Nagaon district is one of the largest districts of Assam in northeastern part of India. The district covers an area of 3993 square kilometer, bounded by sonitpur district and Brhamaputra river on the south side, Karbi Anglong and North Cachar hill on the west side and east Karbi Anglong and Golaghat district on the east side. It has an administrative headquarter at Nagaon town. The major rivers that flow through the district are Brahmaputra, Kalong, Sonai, Nanoi, Jamuna, Kopili and the Barpani. It is a home to the famous Kaziranga National Park. The people live in the district are mainly Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists.

The district has3 sub divisions and 18 blocks, 10 revenue circles and 240 Gaon Panchayats. There are 1420 Villages and 10 towns in Nagaon District

Economy of Nagaon District


The people of this district are basically engaged in Agriculture. More than 50 % of the local population lives in villages. Apart from agriculture the other occupations are fisheries, handicraft, poultry, dairy and handloom.

Places to visit in Nagaon


Bordowa: It is the birth place of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, the founder of Vaisnava Religion in Assam. It is situated 18 kilometers away from Nagaon town. There is a mini museum in Bordowa.The other famous satras of the district are Narowa Sattra and Salaguri Sattra.

Samaguri Bill: It is situated at about 16 kilometer east of Nagaon town. It is also known as Pokhi Tirtha and is famous for migratory birds that flock from different parts of the world, during the winter season.

Lowkhowa Avayaranya: It is a wild life Sanctuary situated at a distance of 25 kilometers from Nagaon town, covering an area of 70 km². The main attraction of the Park is the Great One-horned Rhinoceros. The other animals found in the park are Tiger, Leopard, Asiatic Buffalo, Wild Boar, Civet Cat, Leopard Cat, Hog Deer etc. Besides these various species of birds and reptiles are also found in Lowkhowa Avayaranya.

Champawati Kunda : It is a famous falls situated in Chapanala in Nagaon district.

Kaliabor: It is a sub-division of Nagaon town which is situated at a distance of 48 km east of Nagaon town. The place has historical importance as during the Ahom kingdom it was the headquarters of Barphukans.

Silghat: It is situated at about 50 km from Nagaon town and is used as a port for linking parts of central Assam across the Brahmaputra River. The place is famous for many ancient temples. Assam Co-operative Jute Mill and Samanthagiri hillock is other important tourist attraction spot in this place.

Hojai: It is a sub-divisional town of Nagaon district which is situated at a distance of 61 km from Nagaon town. Hojai is a center of the Agar perfume Industry.

Jugijan: It is situated at about 6 kilometers from Hojai town and is famous for three stone temples.

The nearest airport to reach Nagaon district is the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport at Borjhar in Guwahati.
The nearest railway station is located at Haiborgaon which is under Nagaon district. The nearest Railway Junction is about 28 km away from Nagaon town.
Nagaon district is well connected by road through the National Highway No.36 and No.37. The main city of the state that is, Guwahati city is about 123 kilometers away from Nagaon District.
