Marat Longri Wildlife Sanctuary


Marat Longri Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Karbi Anglong district of Assam.It was declared as a sanctuary in 2003. The sanctuary is famous for its rich vegetation and wildlife. This article will provide all the necessary information about the sanctuary.

Marat Longri Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Karbi Anglong Autononous District Council in the Assam state of North East India. It covers an area of 451.00 sq. km. It was declared as a sanctuary on 17th April, 2003
by the government of Assam. It is an important part of Dhansiri- Lumding Elephant Reserve. The sanctuary is located at the hilly region with several streams and rivulets flowing over the area. There is a river called Jamuna river that flows beside the sanctuary.

What to see in the Sanctuary


As surrounded by hills the sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna. A large number of trees, climbers,orchids and bamboos can be seen in this place. The commonly found mammals in this sanctuary are Elephant, Tiger, Lesser Cat, Barking Deer, Wild Pig, Porcupine, Slow Loris, Pangolin etc. Among reptiles one can see king cobra, Branded Krait, Rock Python, Monitor Lizard, Brown Hill Tortoise etc. Woodland birds are the common birds of this place. Along with it some other bird species like Green Pigeon, Hornbill, Barbets ,White Winged Duck etc are also found here.

Best time to Visit


November to March is the ideal time to visit this sanctuary. During this time many migratory birds come to this place.

How to reach the sanctuary


The nearest airport is Dimapur Airport which is only 60 kms away from the sanctuary. Diphu Railway station is at a distance of 8 kms. Bus service is available from all the major towns of the state including Guwahati.
