Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary


Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Jorhat district of Assam. The sanctuary is named after Hoolock Gibbon, the only Ape found in India. Along with this rare species many other birds and animals can also be seen in this forest. The details of the sanctuary is given below.

Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is a small sanctuary located in Jorhat district of Assam state in North East India. It covers an area of 20.98 square kilometer. The sanctuary is covered by dense semi evergreen forest and surrounded by tea gardens. It is named after the Hoolock Gibbon, the only Ape found in India.

What to see in Hollongapar


Although, the sanctuary is famous for rare Ape species but many other mammals can also be seen in the forest. Some of them are Elephant, Leopard, Tiger, Pangolin, Assamese macaque, Pig tailed macaque, Rhesus macaque, Stump tailed macaque, Capped langur, Slow loris, Jungle cat, Indian civet, Giant squirrel, Barking deer, Sambar, Wild pig, Squirrels. Among the birds, Indian Pied Horn Bill, Osprey, Hill Myna, Kalij pheasant etc are very common here. The commonly found reptiles are Indian Python, Common Monitor Lizard, Indian Tent Turtle and Indian Cobra. Besides these the scenic beauty of the surrounding places are also the major attraction for visitors.

How to reach Hollongapar


The nearest railhead is Mariani Railway Junction which is only 5 kms away from the sanctuary. Rowriah Airport (Jorhat) is 25 kms away and Jorhat town is at a distance of 20 kms. The place is accessible from all the major parts of the state. Regular bus service is available from Jorhat town.

For reservation you have to contact Divisional Forest Officer, Jorhat Division, Tel.- 0376-2320008 (O), 2320456 (R), Prasanti Tourist Lodge under Assam Tourism Department located in Jorhat town is another suitable accommodation for animalvisitors. For reservation you have to contact the Deputy Director, Tourism Department, Jorhat. Many good Hotels are also available in Jorhat town.
