Sibsagar is an important place in Assam and serves as a market area for many towns and villages around it. Before the development of Sibsagar people had to go for some specific shopping to Jorhat City which was quite far about 60 km from Sibsagar area. The main attraction of Sibsagar is the Lord Shiva temple and the adjacent big lake. Tourists and visitors invariably visit this place.

Due to the underground oil and gas reserves in this area the Government of India undertakings ONGC and Oil India Limited are having their operations in this area. Their offices are located in Sibsagar, Nazira, and Moran. These organisations have generated a lot of employment in Assam especially in Sibsagar area and the local markets have also evolved to meet the daily needs of employees working in these organisations.
