Mamoni Raisom Goswami is a well known name in the field of literature in the state of Assam and other parts of the country. She had won many awards for her contribution in the field of literature. A few of them to mention include Sahitya Akademi Award and Jnanpith Award besides many other awards in the field of literature. She is also known for her efforts to initiate peace process between Government and ULFA, an underground organisation in Assam.
She had a spontaneous and lively personality and was a professor, poet and a social reformer. Early days of Mamoni (Indira) Raisom Goswami
Indira Raisom Goswami was born in 14th November 1942 to Umakanta Goswami and Ambika Dev, a Brahmin family.
She achieved great success and recognition in the field of literature and was famous as Mamoni Baideu as used the pen name 'Mamoni Raisom Goswami.' She published her first work in the form of short stories (Chinaki Morom) when she was studying in class VIII at an age of 13 only.
She completed her schooling at Pine Mount School in Shillong, Meghalaya and graduated from Cotton college, Guwahati with a Major in Assamese literature. She also got a masters degree in Assamese literature.
Her life is said to be filled with depression and many times she had attempted to commit suicide. After the early death of her husband Madhaven Raisom Ayengar eighteen months after marriage, she was devastated and was left in a state of shock and depression. To cope with this depression she started to write and work as a teacher.
She had contributed a lot in the field of Assamese literature and some of her stories were made into movies. Some of her widely acclaimed novels and short stories are- Mamore Dhora Tarowal, Hriday ek Nadir Nam, Adha Lekha Dastabej (autobiography), Tej Aru Dhulire Dhusarita Prishtha etc.
Mamoni Raisom Goswami died on 29th November 2011 due to multiple organ failure. She was unwell from a long time and was suffering from Lung infection and other diseases. She was 70 years old when she died.
I had read her autobiography ‘Aadha Lekha Dostabej'. I can hardly remember about her. After her Master degree she was appointed in Soinik School at gualpara. But she got the opportunity to study ‘Ramayana' for Phd. She came to Brindabon for Study. She explains all the sweet and bitter memories of Brindabon. Her life was full of struggle, but the situation that faced in Brindabon was exceptional one.She had to stay in a room which was cave like it was “Khupori"(In Assamese it means small room) in her language. She joined Delhi University after her Phd. She is the angel of Assam.In her novel a charcter named Khushwant Singh is often exists
