The origin and Migration of the Mising and the Adi of NE India

The NE tribes are one of the earliest group of human races migrating to the NE region of India. They are Mising, Adi, Misimi, Galong, Dafla, Apatani etc. There is no doubt originally they were same habited still alike in material respect as to warrant us in calling them the earlier and later migration and the same tribes.

Mising is earlier known as Miri and the Adis are as Abor. The Mising and the Adis belong to the great Mongoloid races of mankind whose original homelands were in the upper course of the Yangtze-Kiang and Hwang-Ho river valleys of North East China.

Adis is known as Abor which means the unconquerable. Abor calls themselves Adi and that means the hill man. They speak different languages of the Sino-Tibetan linguistic group.

From the Sino-Tibetan group, a North Assam linguistic sub-groups formed which is spoken by the Aka, Adi, Mising, Nishi etc. Because Adi and Mising speak languages from the same group, it can be said that the Misings and the Adis migrated to the present habitat through Tibet.

The north Assam tribes like:

  • Adi,

  • Mising,

  • Nishi,

  • Aka,

  • Misimi etc.

  • late comers and settles themselves in the foothills to the North of the Brahmaputra River, after the occupation of Bodo in the Brahmaputra valley.
