What led to the foundation of Akshaya Patra Foundation?

In the case of underprivileged children in India, lack of food is always a challenge to their education. Inorder to earn a single meal in a day, majority of the children are out of school and into child labor. We often read about child labor news in newspapers. Some people believe that child labor is more common in north Indian states. This is absolutely wrong. Both the south Indian as well as north Indian states are playing an important role in child labor. Akshaya Patra Foundation main objective includes providing underprivileged children with a healthy balanced meal which inturn will increase the classroom attendance. When we consider the total population of children in India, we all know that majority of the children comes from poor family background. In that cases the meal provided by Akshaya Patra Foundation is the only complete meal for the day. This mainly provides them the incentive to come to school. Remember that Akshaya Patra foods are mainly prepared by considering a child's taste and nutrition in mind.

Today Akshaya Patra kitchens are located in 18 centres of India namely Guwahati, Manglore, Bangalore, Hubli, Jaipur, Vrindavan, Baran, Nathdwara, Puri, Bhilai, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Vadodara, Vasanthpura, Nayagarah, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Bellary and Mysore respectively. There are 2 types of Akshaya Patra kitchens namely the centralized kitchen and the other is decentralized kitchen respectively. Some of you might be interested to know the differences between these two kitchens, in the case of centralized kitchens, they have a capacity to cook about 1 lakh meals daily. High standards of hygiene are maintained here as there is much less human interference in the cooking process. Here they mainly uses steam heated cauldrons, stainless steel containers and custom built vehicles for cooking process and transportation. From this small points itself we can understand that the role played by Akshaya Patra Foundation is very high. But the case with decentralized kitchen is extremely different. Here the cooking process takes place in an area very close to the school itself. Cooking process is carried out by selected persons. Also the raw materials and infrastructure required for cooking is provided by the Akshaya Patra Foundation. Due to the great contributions made to the world, Akshaya Patra Foundation was given several awards.
