Bangalore is popularly known as 'Garden City', 'Silicon Valley of India', 'Pensioner's Paradise'. It is also rich in cultural history and ancient account.

In Bangalore we can see lots of art galleries crowding the City. One of the best and the most promiment one is the Venkatappa Art Gallery. The Gallery exhibits some of the rich art of Bangalore. The gallery was built as a tribute to the great painter, Artist K.Venkatappa. The works of Venkatappa are exhibited in the gallery.

About Venkatappa:

Venkatappa was born in the year 1887 and he belonged to a family of court painters. The Maharani of Cooch Behar who was a well-known patron of art, and used to be a frequent visitor to Bangalore during her regency days. She met Venkatappa in Bangalore at an exhibition where she saw and admired some of his miniature portraits in ivory and wished to have her late husband's done by him. Venkatappa executed two beautiful miniatures, one in his Indian dress and the other in his European dress, which pleased her immensely. Venkatappa was also a musician of no mean order. He studied the veena under Seshanna of Mysore. His love for art was deep-rooted and it can still be seen in some of his paintings today.

About the Gallery:

The Art Gallery has been divided into two halls. One hall has the stone sculptures from the Mathura and Khajarao schools of arts and the other hall is dedicated to pottery and clay articles of Indus Valley Civilization. Exhibited are the 20th century landscapes and occasional contemporary art show.

The art works are spread over two floors. Around 600 paints are exhibited over there. In the ground floor, the works of Venkatappa are exhibited. The main paintings of Venkatappa include a panoramic view of the Ooty lake, Church Hill view - Ooty, Nilgiri Mountains, Kodaikanal, Ooty sunrise, Monsoon paintings and various other sketches.Apart from these paintings, the Gallery also preserves the books and personal materials used by him. Apart from the above, works of famous painters are also exhibited in the gallery.

The First Floor has works of various painters like M.F.Hussain, Vasudev, Hanumaiah, Hariram, Rekha Rao, Yusuf Arakkal, N.S.Bendre. There is a special section dedicated to the C.P.Rajaram's exclusively collections which has the fine wood carvings.

In the second floor, one could see the paintings of K.K.Hebbar. The section is specially known as 'the Hebbar Section' This section has paintings of nature elements, namely Vayu, Jala, Prithvi, Agni and others.

A comprehensive art gallery, the Venkatappa Art Gallery, also gives room to present contemporary artists to display their works. The Venkatappa Art Gallery is a must visit place for art lovers.

The Venkatappa Art Gallery is open on all days except Monday, Second Saturdays and Government Holidays.

The timings of the Gallery is from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
