More and more people are discovering the delights of trekking spots in Maharashtra, especially as these are not too far from the main cities of Mumbai & Pune. One such popular trekking area in Maharashtra is the Rajmachi Fort.

Location of Rajmachi Fort Maharashtra

Rajmachi Fort is located in the scenic hillsides of Khandala, one of the popular weekend tourist spots in Maharashtra.

How to Reach Rajmachi Fort Maharashtra

Rajmachi Fort is most easily accessible from the small town of Lonavala, located about 10kms from the fort. You can take a train from any of the main cities of Maharashtra to Lonavala Station. Since you are planning a trekking trip, this is the best way to approach Rajmachi Fort Maharashtra – leave your fuel-guzzling bikes & cars behind! From the station, if you do not wish to walk all the way up to the trail leading to Rajmachi Fort, you can take an auto from Lonavala station to a place called Tungarli. The auto driver can even take you right up to the bottom of the Tungarli Hills.

Approach Routes to Rajmachi Fort

Get on the Mumbai - Pune Highway (known as NH4) and ask for directions to Tungarli Lake. You will eventually see a signboard indicating this lake, from where you go ahead to the Tungarli Hills. There is a dirt track which leads you directly to the Rajmachi Fort on the hillside. On this track, after about 1 ½ hours you have to take the left turn when you come to the V-fork in the track. After a brief climb you will reach level ground and then right ahead of you is the fort, with the trekking track going around Rajmachi Fort and straight onwards to the Rajmachi village (it is actually Udhewadi village, but is often referred to as the Rajmachi village).

Note: While approaching Tungarli village and the Dam from Lonavala, there is a small right turn – avoid that completely and take the left turn.

Heading out of Udhewadi, trekkers can hit the path which goes to Kondewadi; this is not the main village of Kondewadi, but a smaller settlement. This path is on the western side of the Rajmachi fort hillside. You can also take some time to have a look at the interesting Buddhist caves called Kondana Caves. Watch out, though! There are often bees setting up their homes right here at these caves. Avoid eating or smoking around these caves, as some kinds of foods (such as an orange) can attract the bees in droves. In fact, it is a good idea not to be over-daring!

You then need to take the trekking road to the bus stop in the main village of Kondewadi. From here you can board a bus to Karjat; a further walk to Karjat is also possible for the more enthusiastic trekkers. At the Karjat railway station you can get trains to Mumbai.

Camping Sites at Rajmachi Fort

You cannot camp directly at the site of the Rajmachi Fort. If you wish to pitch a tent, you will have to walk towards the Kalbhairavnath temple which is located on the road towards Udhewadi village. You can set up your camping gear on the ground a little away from the temple. A tank some distance away (over 80kms) from the temple will fulfil your water needs. There are no restaurants or hotels in the area, but you can request the local villagers to serve you the homely food that is typical of most villages in Maharashtra: junka-bhakar; this is basically a semi-hard flat type of roti served with a little pickle, chutney, or veggies or with one small onion.
