Balasaheb Thackeray Profile Biography

Son of Keshav Sitaram Thackeray, a renowned writer & social activist, Balasaheb Thackeray is a native of Balghat in the State of Madhya Pradesh. He did not start his political career right away, but his love of sketching attracted him to the world of cartoons. Beginning his artistic career with the Free Press Journal, it was not long before Balasaheb Thackeray's cartoons started gracing the pages of the Sunday edition of Times of India, a reputed national daily newspaper. A decade into the profession, Balasaheb Thackeray launched Marmi, a weekly cartoon, with the help of his brother.

Keshav Sitaram Thackeray had been a key figure in the Maharashtra Samyukta movement, which had leaders getting together to demand for a separate State for Marathi-speaking people. The senior Thackray was a regular writer for the Prabodhan (meaning enlightenment) magazine. He was thus respectfully known as Prabodhankar Thackeray. It was thanks to the efforts of people like him, with similar views, that the State of Maharashtra was formed, with Mumbai as its capital city (at that time the city was named Bombay). Following in his father's footsteps, Balasaheb Thackeray took the decision to enter politics to support the Marathi-speaking residents of Maharashtra.

June 19th, 1966 was a landmark day for the Marathi manoos: Balasaheb Thackeray set up the Shiv Sena Party. While the main goal of the Shiv Sena Party was to ensure that locals staying in Maharashtra since decades were given jobs' preference over those who migrated from other States, the Shiv Sena party focused too on other issues, such as promoting Marathi language and culture. Under the astute leadership of Balasaheb Thackeray, the Shiv Sena party combined with the BJP party & won the 1995 Maharashtra State Assembly elections, taking over the reins of the Government.

Today, Balasaheb Thackeray has crossed eighty, but his keen mind is as alert as ever. With a sharp mental acumen, the savvy leader is still very much in the thick of things in the political minefield, eager as ever to support the Marathi manoos.
