M.A. Chidambaram Stadium was formerly known as Madras Cricket Club Ground. The Chepauk Stadium Chennai or M.A. Chidambaram Stadium is located at Chepauk in Chennai which was built in the year 1916. This is one of the largest and oldest stadiums of India. Chennai Chepauk Stadium was built by East Coast Constructions and Industries. It has a capacity to accommodate 50,000 people at a time. The first test match played at Cheapauk Stadium Chennai was on 10th February 1934 between Indian and England. Chepauk Stadium Chennai is the home ground to the IPL Team Chennai Superkings and for the Tamil Nadu Cricket Team. ICC World Cup Cricket was also held at Chepauk Stadium Chennai in the year 1987 and 1996. The first Ranji Trophy match was also played here at Chennai Chepauk Stadium. The pitch was great for both batsmen and equally good for bowlers too. At Chepauk Stadium Sachin Tendulkar has scored more runs than any other venues in India. The stadium is equipped with floodlights to have a greater view. Tamil Nadu Cricket Association contracted Hopkins Architects of England to renovate the stadium to get prepare itself for 2011 ICC World Cup and it is renovated now with area covering 40,000 sq.m. They have laid translucent fabric roof for shades and for better sea breeze they have provided horizontal gap between lower terrace and the upper stands.
