Tamil New Year or the Chithirai Thirunaal


Tamil New year or the Chithirai Thirunaal is celebrated by tamilians with great joy in Tamilnadu. This is the first month Chittirai in the hindu calendar. People get up early in the morning, put kolams in their houses, wear new dresses and pray God for wealth and prosperity. People offer food, fruits, flowers, jewels, money in front of a mirror to the God. The mirror reflects back all the wealth. This is a sign of wealth pouring in all over the year in Tamilnadu. Tamil New year or the Chithirai Thirunaal special recipies are made and the most important is the veppampoo pachadi where all tastes are blend together to signify that life is a mix of all tastes. It falls on April 14 and this year it is on a Sunday.

Madurai Kalazhagar Vaigai Artril Irangudal



Azhagar kovil is a temple for Lord Vishnu situated in Madurai. Kalazhagar Vaigai Artril Irangudal festival is on April 25 this year (2013). On this day, Lord Kalazhagar (or Vishnu) enters into the Vaigai river. There are two important descriptions explaining this. Lord Kalazhagar arrives from azhagar malai to the vaigai river to grant moksha to this devotee. Another reason why the Lord enters into the river is the lord arrives late for the marriage of his sister Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareshwarar. Since the marriage had already taken place, he enters into the river. This happens on the Chithra Powrnami.

Samayapuram Mariamman kovil is situated in Trichi. The Samayapuram ther thiruvizha attracts lakhs of devotees every year. This year, it is on April 16 Monday. This Chitirai ther thiruvizha is celebrated for 13 days. Samayapuram Mariamman in the ther will be pulled by devotees. Samayapuram Mariamman is so powerful that all prayers are answered.

Madurai Meenakshi Amman Thirukalyanam



Madurai Meenakshi Amman koil is situated near the banks of Vaigai in Madurai, the temple city. Every year the thirukalyanam of Lord Sundareswarar with Goddess Meenakshi (Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi). Meenakshi Amman Thirukalyanam signifies the reunion of Lord Shiva's and Lord Vishnu's devotees. This attracts devotees from all over Tamilnadu.
