Marble Palace of Kolkata stands out with its neo-classical European architecture. Dating back to the 19th century, it is a palatial mansion and is famous for its beautiful marble walls, huge lawn and magnificent interiors. It was built by Raja Rajendra Mullick, one of Bengal's richest landlords in the year 1835. The Marble Palace of Kolkata was named so by Lord Minto as 126 different types of marbles, accumulated from different corners of the country was used to build this palace.

Local buses, metered taxis ply regularly from various parts of Kolkata. You can catch any buses that ply along Chittaranjan Avenue and then get down to Ram Mandir Stop.

Special Attractions of Marble Palace, Kolkata


This architectural masterpiece is made from the extensive use of Italian Marble which is a must see. There is a lush green lawn in front of the palace where you will find exquisite sculptures and statues of Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, Christopher Columbus and Lord Buddha. There are also some sculptures of lions, which are also worth seeing.

This is a three-storey building, which has tall fluted Corinthian pillars and ornamented verandas, built in the style of Chinese pavilion.

As you walk upstairs you will come across fully mirrored rooms, which showcases rare works of Reynolds, Rubens and Murillo. The two paintings by Rubens, "the Marriage of St. Catherine" and " The Martyrdom of S Sebastian" is a must see.

You will also come across numerous object-d'-arts, statues, furnitures, European antiques, old pianos, and a large collection of 82 exquisite clocks.

Once you have explored the interiors of this enchanting palace, make it a point to visit the Sparking lakewhich is located on the North Western façade of the palace.

There is also a Marble Palace Zoo, located just next to the palace. It houses peacocks, hornbills, storks, pelicans and different kinds of birds also.
