Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay - Bengali Novelist
Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was one of the famous novelists of Bengal during 20th century. Early Life of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay
Sarat Chandra was born on 15th September 1865 in a poor family in a small village of Debanandapur under Hooghly district of West Bengal. He completed his primary education from Hooghly Primary School and then moved to Bhagalpur to do his college education. He passed Matriculation and took up arts as his subject. But he discontinued his further education due to poor financial condition of his family. In the year 1903 he moved to Burma and there he joined a company in Rangoon as a clerk. Sarat Chandra spent 20yrs of his life in Bhagalpur and during those years he wrote majority of his novels, which are mainly based on his experiences in Bhagalpur. His novels are very much close to the heart of any human being and so one is easily touched by reading his writings. His works speaks of the simple day to day life stories of families and his novels mainly became famous for its simplicity. These include Devdas (1901), Bindur Chele (1913), Ramer Sumati (1914), Biraj Bou (1914) and many more. Many of his writings are also based on his real life experiences. These include Srikanta in four parts, which was published during 1917-1933, Charitrahin (1917), Palli Samaj (1916) and Biraj Bou. He has also composed some of other best novels namely Grihadaha (1919), Datta (1917-19), Dena-Paona (1923).
Many of his novels were converted and dramatized into films by eminent directors and all of them became huge success. Some of the most noted Films are Devdas (both in Bengali and Hindi), Parineeta (both in Hindi and Bengali), Bindur Chele, Srikanto, Mejh Didi, Sesh Prasna and many more. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was given several awards for his contributions to Bengali literature. The first award won by him was Kuntalin Puraskar (1903). He was also given Jagattarini Gold Medal by Calcutta University in the year 1923 and was also given honorary D.litt by the University of Dhaka in the year 1936.
