Family Background of Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee was born on 5th January 1955 in a lower middle class family in Kolkata. Her father's name is Late Promileswar Banerjee and mother's name is Gayatri Banerjee. She has one elder brother and two younger brothers. She lost her father when she was very young.Education of Mamata Banerjee
She has done her Honor's degree in History from Jogomaya Devi College in Kolkata. After that she has done Master's degree from Calcutta University and then completed her B.Ed degree from Sikshayatan College in Kolkata. Starting Phase
She started her political career when she was very young in the year 1970. She joined Congress and soon became the General Secretary of Mahila Congress and holds this position from 1976 to 1980. After that in the year 1984 in the General Election Assembly she defeated famous Communist politician Somnath Chatterjee from Jadavpur Parliamentary Constituency in West Bengal. In the same year she also took the responsibility of a General Secretary of the All India Youth Congress. But in the year 1989 General Elections she lost her seat. But again in 1991 General Elections she won the seat of Kolkata South Constituency and for many years retained that seat.
Formation of Trinamool Congress Party
In the year 1997 Mamata Banerjee left the Congress Party due to some disagreements with the political leaders of Congress and in the same year she formed the "All India Trinamool Congress" party. Soon this Party gathered importance in West Bengal and is considered as the primary opposition party to the Communist Party in West Bengal.
Railway Minister
In the year 1999 she formed a jhot with BJP-led National Domestic Alliance (NDA) Government and soon after that she became the Railway Minister of India and remained for nearly 2-3 yrs. She presented her first Railway Budget in the year 2000. She presented it very nicely and tried to fulfill the promises she made to people of West Bengal by introducing 19 new trains for the year 2000-2001. She also gave importance to Darjeeling-Himalayan section and tried to develop tourism there. In the year 2009 Mamata Banerjee was elected as the Railway Minister of India for the second time and holding this place till now (2011). During these long years she had performed very well as a Railway Minister of India and announced several trans for West Bengal along with whole part of India. She also looked after the well being of the Railway officers, took extra care to improve the train services and so on.
Political Success of Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee and her party have given some of the superb performances during her long political career. In 2009 Parliamentary Election Trinamool Congress performed well and succeeded to get 19 MP seats among them 5 for women (including Mamata).
In the year 2010 Municipal Elections of West Bengal Trinamool Congress performed very well and won the Corporation in a margin of 62 votes.
The most noted success came to her in West Bengal Bidhansabha Assembly Election 2011 where Trinamool Congress defeated the Left Front Government by eradicating the 34 years of Left's rule in West Bengal. This is a massive success for Trinamool Party and we all hoping to see Mamata Banerjee as a new Chief Minister of West Bengal.
