Introduction of Gorumara National Park
Gorumara National Park is situated in Jalpaiguri district in northern parts of West Bengal on the flood plains of the rivers Murti and Jaldhaka. In the year 1895 Gorumara was declared as a Reserve Forest and in the year 1994 it was converted into National Park.How to reach Gorumara National Park
By Air
Bagdogra is the nearest airport, which is very close to Siliguri. Regular flights are available from Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai and Guwahati to reach Bagdogra Airport. From there one can get hired cars or taxis to reach Gorumara National Park.
By Rail
The nearest railway station is Madarihat. One can also get out at Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar or Koachbihar railway station and hire a jeep or car to reach Gorumara National Park. Lataguri is the gateway for this national park.Where to stay in Gorumara National Park
Accommodation is not at all problem in this national park. There are large no of tourist lodges and hotels to stay at Gorumara. Inside the Gorumara sanctuary one can stay in a beautiful 2 rooms bungalows runned by the Forest Department.
One can also stay at Murti Nature and Wilderness Resort, which is located on Lataguri-Nagrakata road.
There are also some private resorts located just on the entrance of the park in Lataguri. They are Silver Ridge Resort and Panchavati Resort. It is advisable to do the bookings in advance.Best Time to visit Gorumara National Park
The best time to visit Gorumara National Park is between the months of November to March. The park remains closed from mid June to mid September and during that time no one can visit this park. What to see in Gorumara National Park
Gorumara National park is surrounded by moist deciduous forest area and is rich in wide ranging floras and fauna. The forest area is surrounded by Sal trees, and many other trees like Teak, Simul, and Siris etc. The view of the National Park with breathtaking landscape and its rivers and mountain ranges is really magnificent.
Animal lovers will definitely enjoy at this National Park. There are a large no of Asian Elephants roaming around, wide range of Deers like Barking Deer, Hog Deer, Sambar Deer. One can find here Leopards along with many carnivores including Civets, Mongoose, and small cats. The park is also the home for a large number of monkeys, turtles, pythons, reptiles and more than 200 species of bird. Noted bird species seen there are Minivets, Pheasants, Hornbills, Woodpeckers, Cuckoos and many kinds of storks and ducks.
In Gorumara National Park there are a number of watch-towers, which will surely help the tourists to get a splendid view of the whole park and its wild life. Some noted watch-towers are Jatraprasad Watch Tower (named in the memory of a Kunki elephant), Rhino Point, which is located in the front of the Gorumara Forest Rest house, Chukchuki Tower which is a bird watching point and many others.
