Sunil Gangopadhyay - Famous Indian Poet and Novelist


Sunil Gangopadhyay is a prolific writer who has showed his excellence in his different writings. He has written more than 200 novels including fictions, short stories both for adults and children, more than 100 poems and plays. Early Life of Sunil Gangopadhyay


Sunil Gangopadhyay was born on 7th September in the year 1934 in a small village of Maichara at Faridpur district, which is now in Bangladesh. He spent his college days in Kolkata and studied at the Surendranath College, DumDum Motijheel College and City College (North), all under University of Calcutta. Later he completed his Master's degree in Bengali from University of Calcutta, College Street.

Works of Sunil Gangopadhyay


Sunil Gangopadhyay began his literary career in the year 1953 as a poet. His first poetry magazine Krittibas was published. In the year 1966 his first novel Atmaprakash was published and instantly it touched the heart of many readers. His Nikhilesh and Neera series of poems have been very much popular and till today they are been read by young generation. His other noted novels are Aranyer Dinratri, Sei Samay, Rokto, Arjun, Purush, Pratham Alo, Moner Manush and many more. His novels Aranyer Dinratri, Arjun has been dramatized into films directed by another eminent director Satyajit Ray.
He has also written a number of fictions for children and the most famous of them is the Kakababu series, a fully adventurous fiction.

Awards received by Sunil Gangopadhyay


He received the Indian Sahitya Akademi award in the year 1985 for his historical fiction Sei Somoy. In the year 1982 he received the Bankim Puraskar and twice in the years 1972 and 1989 he received the Ananda Puraskar.
