Early Life of Soumitra Chatterjee


Soumitra Chatterjee was born on 19th January in the year 1935 in a small town of Krishnanagar of West Bengal. From his childhood he was very much attached with the Bengali poetry and dramas. During his schooling days he used to act in school dramas. At the age of ten he with his family shifted to Kolkata where he completed his Matriculation from Howrah Zilla School. Then he completed his graduation in literature from Calcutta University. Before pursuing his career in films he worked in All India Radio in Kolkata as Radio Announcer.

Film Career of Soumitra Chatterjee


Soumitra Chatterjee's first debut film was in the year 1959 in "Apur Sansar" directed by the famous director Satyajit Ray. This film became instant hit in the Box office and young Soumitra's acting also took a place in the heart of film lovers and other directors. Soumitra Chatterjee has a close association with the famous director Satyajit Ray and he is seen acted almost in every films directed by Satyajit Ray. During the 70's-80's Soumitra Chatterjee acted in many films directed by Satyajit Ray which became instant famous. Some of them are Charulata, Samapti, Ghare Bhaire, Sonar Kella, Kapurush, and Joy Baba Felunath. Soumitra Chatterjee also showed his excellence in various other films directed by other popular Bengali directors at that time. The noted ones are Teen Bhubaner Pare, Prothom Kodom Phool, Akash Kusum, Saat Pake bandha, Parineeta, Basanto Bilap, Datta, Devdas and many more. He has also acted with almost every famous actresses of Bengali film industry like Suchitra Sen, Sharnila Tagore, Madhabi mukhopadhyay, Tanuja, Aparna Sen and many more.

Awards and Accolades of Soumitra Chatterjee


Soumitra Chatterjee received the highest award for arts from France namely "The Officier des Arts Metiers". He has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Italy Government. In the seventies he refused the Padmasree award from the Indian Government but later on in 2004 he accepted the Padma Bhushan award from the President of India. in the year 2008 he also received the National Film Award for Best Actor from Government of India.
Famous French director Catherine Berge made a full-length documentary film on him.
