Sharmila Tagore was born on 8th December in the year 1946 in the city of Hyderabad of Andhra Pradesh. She was born in a Hindu Bengali family and her father's name was Gitindranath Tagore. His father was at that time working as the Deputy General Manager of the British India Company. Sharmila Tagore is the great grandniece of noted Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. She completed her schooling from St John's Diocesan Girls School and college from Loreto Convent at Asansol.

As she belongs to a conservative Tagore family she has no previous acting experience. She started her career in Bengali Film "Apur Sansar" directed by famous director Satyajit ray opposite Soumitra Chatterjee. At that time her age was only fourteen but her acting in that film was appreciated. From thereafter she took acting seriously and was seen many of the films directed by Satyajit Ray. In the year 1960 she acted in Devi directed by Satyajit Ray. Later on she has acted in Nirjan Saikatey directed by famous director Tapan Sinha, Aranyer Din Ratri, Seemabaddha, Nayak directed by Satyajit Ray and Amanush directed by Shakti Samanta. She has acted opposite famous actor of Bengal Uttam Kumar in Nayak and Amanush.

In bollywood film she made her debut with the movie "Kashmir ki Kali" opposite Shammi Kapoor in the year 1964 and the film became instant hit and thereafter she got many offers from eminent directors of Bollywood. Again in the year 1967 she acted opposite Shammi Kapoor in the movie "An evening in Paris". She was spotted there as the first Indian actress to wear bikini. After that she never have to look back in Bollywood and formed popular on screen pairs with leading actors like Rajesh Khanna, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra, and Amitabh Bachchan, Famous films where she acted as a leading actress are Amar Prem, Daag, Maalik, Safar, Mausam, Aradhana, Chupke Chupke, Namkeen, Faraar and many more. In the year 1969 she married Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, well-known cricketer of India and adopted the Islam religion. After marriage she changed her name to Begum Ayesha Sultana. They have now one son and two daughters. Their son is Saif Ali Khan renowned actor of Bollywood, and daughters are Saba Ali Khan who is renowned designer and Soha Ali Khan, noted actress of Bollywood.
