The story of the Bengali film Noukadubi is like that. Ramesh who is the lead character of this film Noukadubi is a law student who loves Hemnalini who is the sister of his friend. One day suddenly Ramesh's Father send a letter to him and told him to come back to his Village town because they fixed his marriage to Susheela who is the daughter of a helpless and poor widow. As Ramesh is in love with Hemnalini so he first refused the proposal. But by seeing the helpless mother of Susheela he agreed for his marriage. After his marriage Ramesh and Susheela sat on a boat to go back to Kolkata. But there bad luck. A heavy storm arises on their way of journey. The boat is dipped in the water and Ramesh and Susheela are alive after that accident. Ramesh called Susheela and lastly Susheela opened her eyes and they went to Kashi by train without go to Kolkata. In the birthday of Susheela Ramesh was missed and Susheela lokks afetr the return of Ramesh in hope. The main story of Noukadubi starts from her. She is not Susheela. She is Kamala whose husband is a doctor and whose name is Nalinaksha Chatterjee. So Ramesh published an advertisement to trace about her. One day Kamala meets Nalinaksha.
