His parents were K.Radhakrishnan and Dr.Harini Radhakrishnan who were very supportive to Unnikrishnan throughout his life. Unnikrishanan had his schooling at the Asan memorial school, Chennai in 1983. He got his Bachelor's degree from the Vivekananda College, Chennai and received a B.Com degree from the Madras University. He was merited with a General Law and a post graduate Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial relations. After his graduation, he worked as an executive in Parrys Confectionary Ltd. during the period 1987 to 1992. He quit his job to become a professional singer.
Unnikrishnan wife name is Priya who is a well known Bahrathanatiyam and Mohiniyattam dancer. Their marriage took place on November 1994 and they were also blessed with one son and also one daughter. Even at the age of 12, he was let into carnatic music under various gurus. He earned a special attention by attending a workshop for 6 months on the “veena Dhanamal Bhani under Sangeetha Kalanidhi T.Brinda and Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr.T.Vishwanathan. From the young age onwards he started giving great performance. From the childhood days itself he seemed to be very active and bright and also was good in singing. His debut into the cine industry brought him mammoth fame by the song ‘ennavale adi ennavale' from the movie Kadhalan for the music director, the veteran A.R.Rahman directed by Shankar. Unnikrishan mainly focuses on the carnatic era and the ragas that are ought to create a higher definition in music.
