Sunil Mittal soon after his graduation from Punjab University started his first business in 1976 with a capital investment of Rs. 20,000 borrowed from his father and started a bicycle manufacturing business in Ludhiana with his friend. Later he moved on to Mumbai where he became exclusive dealer for Suzuki Motor's in the business of selling portable generators imported from Japan but later as the government banned the import of gensets, he then entered into business of manufacturing of electronic push button phones in 1986 a tie up with Siemens AG a German Company. He then expanded his business by introducing cordless phones, fax machines and telecom related products. In 1995 Sunil Mittal launched Bharti Cellular Limited under the brand name AirTel. In 2006, he made a joint venture with US retail giant Wal-Mart and has established a number of retail stores all over India. Soon after several accolades followed this ambitious entrepreneur. The philanthropist Sunil Bharti Mittal through his Bharti Foundations has established over 200 schools. Today his empire has spread out the entire country providing value based service in telecom industry.
